Chevy Chase resident George Huguely V was found guilty of second-degree murder and grand larceny Wednesday in a Charlottesville, Va. courthouse. The former University of Virginia lacrosse player was accused of killing his ex-girlfriend Yeardley Love of Cockeysville. The jury recommended Huguely be sentenced to 26 years in prison.


A fight in Winston Churchill High School's main gym involving at least four girls was caught on tape by students with mobile phones and posted on YouTube before being removed for violating the site's terms of service. .

Second Man Charged With Attempted Murder

A second suspect has been charged with attempted murder, as more details emerge in the case of a Germantown man who police said eluded armed assailants by faking a gunshot wound. Stephen Hammond, 28, of Ellicott City, Md., is being held on a $750,000 bond, police said Thursday. A Montgomery County District Court judge on Wednesday ordered another suspect, Quinnton Brown, 24, of Columbia Md., be held in lieu of bail. Read more at Germantown Patch.

Del. Sam Arora, who cast the Montgomery County delegation’s lone vote against a bill legalizing same-sex marriage, received heavy criticism and a letter from his legislative aide, who resigned in a protest. 


Named for the elementary school they all attended, a six-year run of success is coming to an end for the Darnestown's DEStroyers. The girls' rec basketball team has lost only two games in six years. .

The Department of Permitting Services has approved a waiver request for Westfield, lowering the parking ratio so that Westfield is not required to construct additional parking for the new Costco wing at Wheaton Mall. Neighborhood groups argued unsuccessfully that because Costco has not yet been built, Westfield could not yet properly evaluate how much parking would be needed.

The site-selection committee for the new Bethesda-Chevy Chase cluster middle school chose Kensington's Rock Creek Hills Park over North Chevy Chase Park as the recommended location for the new school, echoing the last group's opinion. .

One of men accused in the beating and shooting of Briggs Chaney resident Julian Kelly was sentenced to five years in prison. Shamire Moore faced up to 20 years for his conviction of second-degree assault and second-degree conspiracy to commit assault. Originally facing murder charges, Moore and a co-defendant, who was acquitted of all charges, were found not guilty of the actual homicide. Read more on Colesville Patch.
