Mother, Child Jump From Car on Beltway Following Baltimore Carjacking

24-year-old mother suffered a cut to the head; baby appeared to be uninjured, police said.

A mother and her infant jumped out of her car on the Capital Beltway near Cabin John Parkway Wednesday evening after being carjacked near Baltimore, according to the Maryland State Police.

Terron Alvin White, 22, of McCulloh Street in Baltimore, was arrested following the incident, according to a state police news release.

The ordeal began around 10:10 p.m. in Baltimore, when police there received a report of a carjacking at a gas station near the 2800 block of Edmondson Avenue. Witnesses told police a man stole a car with a woman and baby inside and drove away.

The man struck at least one car as he left the gas station, police said.

Around 10:30 p.m., the car — a black 1995 Lexus GS 300 — sideswiped a Maryland state police cruiser parked near an Intercounty Connector construction zone in the shoulder of southbound I-95 near Route 212, police said.

Police said the driver of the stolen vehicle led the officer on a high-speed chase that at times exceeded 100 miles per hour. The driver sped onto the outer loop of the Capital Beltway, heading west. Another police officer spotted the vehicle near the Connecticut Avenue around 10:45 p.m., now traveling around 45 miles per hour with the passenger door hanging open, apparently caused by damage during the collision with the police cruiser.

Police said the driver continued to elude officers, driving erratically, changing lanes and changing speeds between 60 miles per hour and 10 to 20 miles per hour.

Finally, just past Cabin John Parkway, the 24-year-old mother jumped out of the car with her 20-month-old child, rolling into lane three of the highway, according to police.

The mother suffered a cut to the head and the baby appeared to be uninjured, police said. Both were treated at Suburban Hospital.

Police said the driver pulled over less than a tenth of a mile past where the mother and her child jumped from the car. Terron Alvin White was arrested and his charges include fleeing and eluding police, hit and run, and negligent driving. Criminal charges are pending in Baltimore related to the carjacking, police said.

The officer whose cruiser was sideswiped was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
