Night-time Rockville Pike Lane Closures Set To Launch Monday

Re-paving work that will bring evening and night-time lane closures to the Rockville Pike is set to launch Monday, according to the Maryland State Highway Administration.

The work, expected to last three weeks between South Drive and Jones Bridge Road, will mean delays for drivers.

The re-paving is planned as a part of utility relocation work that’s underway in advance of a major intersection improvement project at Cedar Lane and Rockville Pike, according to SHA spokeswoman Kellie Boulware.

“The crews saw there was severe rutting in the pavement south of the intersection, so they wanted to get down there and get the extra paving done while they were doing the work anyway,” Boulware said.

The project at 355 and Cedar Lane is part of a planned to ease the impact of the federally-mandated Base Realignment and Closure process, which drew 2,500 new employees to the last year.

Weather permitting, the re-paving will begin at 7 p.m. Monday. One lane will be closed in both directions on Rockville Pike between South Drive and Jones Bridge Road between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., and then two lanes beginning at 10 p.m. weeknights. The lanes will re-open before 5 a.m. each day, according to the SHA.

The work is to improve the ride quality for the nearly 49,000 vehicles that use the congested 355 corridor daily, according to SHA. State transportation officials are advising drivers to plan for extra commute time.
