Odor From Roofing Product Prompts Shoppes of Bethesda Evacuations

Responders are going store to store in the plaza to make sure no heavy odor remains.

The Shoppes of Bethesda shopping plaza on Hampden Lane was partially evacuated Friday afternoon because an odor from a roofing product entered some of the stores.

Shortly after 1 p.m. workers at Rocky's Video at 4920 Hampden Lane called Montgomery County Fire and Rescue to report what they thought was an odor of gas, according to Assistant Chief Scott Graham, a Fire and Rescue spokesman.

When responders arrived, they discovered the odor was coming from a product being used by roofers working on the roof of the plaza, Graham said.
