Police: Driver of Bus that Crashed in Bethesda Died of Heart Attack

Joseph A. Clabaugh, Jr.'s death wasn't related to crash, investigators say.

The driver of a bus that drove off a skyramp in Bethesda Wednesday and crashed into the northbound lanes of I-270 died of a heart attack, according to information released today by the Maryland State Police.

Driver Joseph A. Clabaugh Jr., 66, of Hanover, Pa. was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The bus was carrying 11 other people, including children and their parents returning to Pennsylvania after a trip to Washington, D.C, all of whom survived.

The news release cited information from the Medical Examiner's office, which conducted an autopsy. The Maryland State Police also gathered information from passengers on the bus. "Multiple passengers told investigators the driver appeared to be sweating profusely," the release read. "One passenger asked him if he was okay just before he appeared to pass out and slumped over the wheel, as the bus left the roadway."

Clabaugh's death was not related to any injuries sustained in the crash, according to the release.
