Co-Worker Arrested in Lululemon Murder

Police charge D.C. resident Brittany Erin Norwood with first-degree murder.

Update, 7:55 p.m.:  Montgomery County Police have named 27-year-old Brittany Erin Norwood, the woman initially thought to be the surviving victim of the Lululemon attacks, as the suspect in the March 11 murder of Jayna Murray.

Norwood, of an unconfirmed address in Washington, D.C., was arrested on Friday at police headquarters in Rockville. She has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held at the Montgomery County Detention Center pending processing.

Montgomery County Police Chief J. Thomas Manger said that police's initial approach to their investigation was based on information given to them by Norwood.

Norwood was found injured and tied up in the Lululemon store on March 12. Police are investigating whether she tied herself up and inflicted her own wounds.

Norwood told police that she and Murray had been sexually assaulted by two masked men. There is no evidence that either woman was sexually assaulted, Manger said.

Based on several tips, police had leads "that looked promising" and developed a "person of interest" in the case, whom police placed under surveillance. That person is no longer of interest.

Later, as police analyzed forensic evidence, Norwood's story started to unravel.

"When we respond to a case like this, all we had was what we believed to be the surviving victim told us," Manger said. "You have to work on that assumption in the beginning. As the investigation went on, we went where the evidence was leading us."

Norwood called Murray that night to ask her to let her back into the store because she had left her wallet, Manger said. Police did not discuss a possible motive beyond saying that the women were in a "dispute." A witness told police that they heard two females arguing on the night of the homicide.

The trail of evidence that led police to develop Norwood as the suspect includes items found in Murray's car.  They said Norwood moved the car and it was found three blocks away in a parking lot on Wisconsin Avenue. Police also uncovered only two sets of footprints at the scene — one belonged to Norwood, and another belonged to a size 14 shoe that belonged to the store.

To the extent that the Bethesda community has been shaken by the fear that this was a random crime, "This story should allay those fears," said Councilman Roger Berliner (D-Dist. 1).

"The people of Bethesda are breathing easier tonight," Berliner said.
