According to Maryland law, Norwood must be sentenced to life imprisonment, and she faces a maximum sentence of life without parole. Montgomery County State's Attorney John McCarthy said Wednesday he will pursue that maximum sentence.

However, Norwood's attorney, Douglas Wood, said he would hope for a sentence of life with parole.

Wood said judge Robert Greenberg has “discretion” in his sentencing. “Life with parole, it gives someone hope that they’re eventually going to get out  of jail,” Wood said. “Life without parole, the person never gets out of jail.”

Wood said his client has "shown remorse" for the killing.
