Reports: Suspect's DNA Found on Murder Weapon in Marcum Homicide

FBI affidavit details evidence against slain American University professor's former yoga and Spanish instructor.

An FBI affidavit filed this month in federal court is detailing evidence against the man accused of killing popular American University professor Sue Marcum, according to reports in the Washington Post and the Washington Examiner.

The DNA of Jorge Rueda Landeros was discovered on what investigators believe to be the murder weapon, according to the reports, though the affidavit doesn’t specify what authorities believe the weapon to be.

The news was first reported by the Washington Examiner.

Marcum was in her Bethesda home last fall in what police first believed was a burglary gone wrong. Landeros – Marcum’s former -- was later in the murder.

Landeros, a dual American and Mexican citizen, is currently in his native Juarez, Mexico, working as a yoga instructor. The Post reported this month that Landeros has been emailing detectives in El Paso from across the border.

The affidavit, filed this month in federal court, charges Landeros with unlawful flight, according to the Post. It also describes a joint investment fund in which Landeros and Marcum were both involved.

“In recent electronic mail between Marcum and Landeros, it was clear that Marcum, a university professor who may have had an intimate relationship with Landeros, was increasingly uncomfortable with the fashion in which Landeros was handling and spending the account funds,” the affidavit stated, according to the Post.

In interviews with the Post, Landeros also said that he was the beneficiary of Marcum’s $500,000 life insurance policy, though he declared his innocence in the murder.
