Rockville Pike Pedestrian Underpass Construction To Launch In July

Underpass planned to help ease traffic near Bethesda's Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Construction of a pedestrian underpass to connect Bethesda' with the Medical Center Metro is expected to launch in July, the Gazette reports. The project is expected to be completed two years following.

The underpass beneath Rockville Pike is planned to help ease traffic near Bethesda's Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, which has seen 2,500 new employees since its September merger with the former Walter Reed Military Medical Center as a part of the federally-mandated Base Realignment and Closure process.

Yearly visitors to the facility are expected to nearly double to one million, inciting a host of traffic concerns. Nearly recently for the state and the county to construct transportation improvements around the hospital -- including the underpass project.

The Montgomery County Council unanimously voted Tuesday to set aside $68.174 million in construction funds for the project, the Gazette reports, though it will be funded by two grants from the U.S. Department of Defense.
