Smoking Insulator Reported In Metro Tunnel

Fire and Rescue officials couldn't immediately determine whether the insulator was closer to Bethesda or Friendship Heights.

Trains are single-tracking between Friendship Heights and Medical Center as Montgomery County Fire and Rescue respond to the report of smoking insulator somewhere between the Bethesda and Friendship Heights metro stations, and possibly in the tunnel heading into Washington, D.C.

Just before 10:30a.m., fire and rescue officials couldn't immediately determine the source of the smoke, and whether it was affecting the tunnel area or the platform area. No one had been injured or evactuated, according to fire and rescue spokesman Capt. Oscar Garcia.

Smoking insulators have been an ongoing problem near Bethesda. Metro has been working on a and Metro has told Patch that water coming into contact with the third rail may be accountable for the smoking insulators causing all the problems. Aging insulators may also be the culprit.
