The U.S. Open: What to Wear

It's important to stay comfortable and cool while watching the golf championship.

Heading to the U.S. Open this week, but not sure what to wear? Patch recently chatted with Phil Hawes, long time owner of in Bethesda and the co-host of Better Golf, a weekly radio program on ESPN 980, the local ESPN radio affiliate, about fashion tips for spectators.

“It may sounds obvious, but if someone is a spectator, the first thing they have to do is wear comfortable shoes,” Hawes said.

Spectators will be walking quite a bit on the grounds, Hawes said, whether it’s walking from the spectator dropoff area to the clubhouse or walking five or six miles to watch a player play a round, Hawes said. Plan to be on the grounds for several hours at a time, Hawes said.

Some spectators opt to wear spikeless golf shoes or rubber soled shoes, Hawes said. Metal spiked golf shoes are among the prohibited items on the course, however.

Spectators should also remember to wear clothes that keep them cool and a hat to ward off the sun, Hawes said.

“The nice thing about Congressional is there are so many trees, it’s pretty easy when the weather gets hot to try to stay out of the sun.”

Another piece of advice from Hawes? Pack light. “Too many spectators, if they haven’t been to an event like this before, bring too much stuff,” Hawes said. “There’s plenty of food and water on the golf course, so you don’t have to carry a lot of junk.”

When it comes to fashion, men will typically wear golf attire, Hawes said. That includes a collared shirt with three buttons in the front, often made with moisture-wicking fabrics. Shorts are acceptable because of the heat, Hawes said.

For women, golf attire is much more wide-ranging, Hawes said. Many take the opportunity to get dressed up, but wide-brimmed or straw hats, shorts and sleeveless blouses are typical, according to Hawes. Halter tops, he said, are typically a no-no.

Remember to stay cool – sunscreen is a good idea – and to drink plenty of fluids.
