Weigh In On Proposal To Hike Parking Fees, Ride On Fares

Public hearing set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday evening.

The community can weigh in Tuesday evening at a public hearing before the Montgomery County Council on a proposal that would hike Ride On bus fares. The proposal also calls for charging for parking in Bethesda and Silver Spring on Saturdays and raising parking fees in Bethesda, Silver Spring and Wheaton.

The proposal, introduced by County Executive Isiah Leggett (D) in March as a part of his recommended operating budget, includes:

  • Hiking the cost of the monthly Ride On bus pass from $40 to $45
  • Raising the Ride On cash fare from $1.70 to $2 and the SmarTrip fare from $1.50 to $1.60
  • In the Bethesda parking lot district, hiking long-term parking rates from 75 cents an hour to 85 cents an hour and bumping the cost of a monthly pass from $140 to $160, effective July 1
  • Charging Bethesda parkers on Saturdays, effective October 1
  • In the Silver Spring parking lot district, hiking the long-term parking rate from 60 cents an hour to 70 cents an hour, and raising the cost of a monthly pass from $113 to $132, effective July 1
  • In Silver Spring, charging parkers on Saturdays and until 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, effective October 1
  • In the Wheaton parking lot district, charging parkers until 10 p.m. in lots and on-street metered spaces, effective July 1

Other changes that have not been formally proposed but may be on the table for public comment include charging Silver Spring parkers until 10 p.m. and raising the short and long-term parking rates in the Wheaton parking lot district from 50 cents an hour to 60 cents an hour, along with hiking a monthly pass in the Wheaton PLD from $95 to $113.

It's not the first time Leggett has proposed raising parking lot district parking rates and charging for Saturday parking. Last year, a

A worksession on the proposal is tentatively scheduled at the Montgomery County Council’s Transportation, Infrastructure, Energy and Environment committee for April 30. The full council is set to take action on the operating budget, including the proposed parking fee and Ride On fare hikes, in May.

Tuesday’s public hearing is set for 7:30 p.m. in the County Council Hearing Room at 100 Maryland Avenue in Rockville. To testify, call 240-777-7803.

What do you think about Leggett’s proposal to raise Ride On bus fares and increase parking fees in Bethesda, Silver Spring and Wheaton? Tell us in the comments.

Once again, another attempt to gouge the citizens of Montgomery County! We already pay some of the highest taxes in the nation!! In addition, this will impact businesses in the downtown Bethesda district, causing many to stay away if they have to add paying for the already limited parking and worrying about the meter running out and getting a ticket!

The parking fee has gone up from $95 three years ago to $160, or over 68%. Nice going Mr. Leggett. After July of this year I will now be driving to downtown DC and taking advantage of free parking offered by my employer. I have avoided doing this to avoid the stress of driving and the wish to use public transportation to minimize gasoline usage. No more. Enough is enough. My wallet is not your wallet.

You peple complain about these worthless scumbags in the county council and county exec, but you continue to vote for them. If they quit giving out freebees to groups of people like ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS, the so called "poor people" (you know the ones that ALWAYS have their hands out and don't want to work for a living and remain on the gvmt dolls), etc. Did you know over 70% ridership on Ride on is freebees or discounted when the taxpayer picks up the burden (as in MANY cases in MoCo) on both ends, by paying taxes and if they use mass transit, paying for the ticket to ride. What needs to be done is ALL of them fired and vote in new blood, people who know how to run a business inoffice. THEY THINK WE ARE ATM MACHINES...Especially that other idiot Berliner (along with that nutcase leventhal and others) who got them to pass the cap and trade, which made our electric bills go up and up.

WELL, where are all the comments now???? I spoke the truth and you ALL are quite? Why do you people complain when you think you know what you are doing when you go an vote these knuckleheads in, they cry the blues when they treat ALL TAXPAYERS as their own personal ATM machines. What I want to suggest is that when you go to the polls in November, you VOTE THEM OUT. Starting with county council members, county exec, (if they are on ballots this go around...Cardin, Mikulski, van hollen, edwards, and so on. Get the new guys (the GOPers and conservatives) in there and we will ALL be better off. BTW, if you follow the money (which you should do) you will see that ALL that I have mentioned are giving away our (yeah all you libs too) hard earned taxes to groups like casa of md, illegals, paying for muslim community centers, and all their own little pet peave projects to but votes. WAKE UP PEOPLE.
