Woodmont Closure Pushed Back; Street Will Close Friday

Commuters will have to maneuver around a stretch of Woodmont Avenue that will close for 20 months.

The closure of a stretch of Woodmont Avenue south of Bethesda Avenue has been pushed back.

The road will be closed between Bethesda Avenue and Miller Avenue starting Friday, Sept. 7, at 9 p.m., according to Ken Hartman, director of the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center.

Initial estimates called for the closure to begin Tuesday.

The 20-month closure will allow for the construction of a major public parking garage—with 940 public parking spaces—and two residential developments. The project has already prompted the shutdown of at the intersection.

The shutdown of a stretch of a major thoroughfare near busy Bethesda Row is sure to impact traffic, officials have said.

Closing this short strech of roadway should not present any problem to commuters or those destined for business on either side of the closure. If people can't negotiate a way around this detour, they should not be driving. Then again, that applies to a lot of drivers out there.
