Brown Endorsed by Mikulski, Favored in Poll

A polling agency found the most support for the Brown-Ulman ticket in the Democratic gubernatorial primary next June.

Maryland Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown received strong support for his campaign for governor of Maryland last Sunday when U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) endorsed him at a rally at Silver Spring's Veterans Plaza.

Brown's running mate—the one who would replace him as lieutenant governor—is Howard County Executive Ken Ulman.

Mikulski, who chairs the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, cited her work with Brown—to improve health care in Maryland, to reduce domestic violence and to spur middle class job creation—in her endorsement, according to a news release from Brown's office.

"I support Anthony Brown because I’ve worked with him for 15 years, watching up close as he solved the most pressing problems facing Maryland families and women. I see in Anthony the fantastic values I most admire—he’s honorable, he’s patriotic and he’s willing to tackle the tough issues," Mikulski said.

"Whether it's his initiatives to improve services for our veterans, his leadership in expanding quality and affordable healthcare to nearly 400,000 Marylanders, or his work to bring tens of thousands of jobs to our state as part of the BRAC process, Anthony is getting the job done for Marylanders."

In response, Brown said that "Senator Barbara Mikulski is one of the most effective leaders Maryland has ever had and I'm honored to have earned her support," according to the news release.

mid-September poll (with a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points) by polling agency Garin-Hart-Yang found Brown taking 43 percent of the vote in Maryland’s June 2014 gubernatorial primary election, compared to 21 percent voting for Attorney General Doug Gansler, 5 percent voting for Del. Heather Mizeur and 31 remaining undecided, according to Garin-Hart-Yang, Brown's office reported.

Also endorsing Brown are Gov. Martin O’Malley, Democratic Whip Rep. Steny Hoyer, Congressman Elijah Cummings, Congresswoman Donna Edwards, State Senate President Thomas V. "Mike" Miller Jr. and more than half of Maryland’s Democratic elected county executives, council members and commissioners.
