A Memory of Candy Apples

Recalling memories is the stuff of my storytelling. When I was reading Marilu Henner's book "The Total Memory Make-over" I was fascinated by her writing about ways to use your five senses to bring back bits of your past. I decided to flip through photos and see if by using those prompts I could recapture the sounds, tastes and smells of that moment. It works.

Recently I ran across this photo of candied apples and I remembered exactly where and when I took the picture.

My daughter Karen and I were on our way to Charlotte we saw the Highway 77 exit sign for the turn to Mt. Airy and we thought of Andy and Barney. "Want to?" She nodded yes!  This was a chance to visit a familiar television world. A few likes later made the turn to Mount Airy and visit the North Carolina town which was used as Mayberry on the Andy Griffith Show.

We rode into town on a beautiful October day and found a Fall Fair filling the main street. There were stalls selling crafts, food stuffs, and Christmas gifts. We stopped to listen to an old-timer playing a rousing fiddle tune. At one stall a couple was dipping apples in hot candy syrup and dropping them onto metal trays to "set". The air smelled spicy and sweet. My head was filled with memories of my childhood and I felt like I was at "home" with Halloween just around the corner.

Have you every taken an unexpected turn to revisit the past?
