This first-ever Battle of the Beltway Birdathons is a friendly competition between the Audubon Naturalist Society (ANS), headquartered in Chevy Chase, and
Irvine Nature Center in Owings Mills, Maryland to raise funds to protect nature in the DC region and Baltimore.
The birdathons are annual fundraising events put on by both
ANS and Irvine each spring to raise funds to support their mission driven work,
which is focused on nature protection and education. This year, both
organizations will run their birdathons from Earth Day, April 22 through
Memorial Day, May 26, 2014. And, for the first-time ever, ANS and Irvine will compete
to see whose supporters collectively can count greatest number of bird species
total—the Battle of the Beltway Birdathons.
A winner will be crowned—with a Bird’s Nest Crown—at an event in
early-June.
To participate, individuals or teams count as many bird
species as they can in one 24-hour period over the course of the one month
birdathon event. Sponsors pledge or donate to ANS or Irvine based on the
numbers counted. Participation is open to all, as counters or sponsors.
