Through her paintings, Lori Anne Boocks seeks to map connections between memories and document what remembering looks like. Words and numbers serve as subject matter as she strips away literal meaning by obscuring charcoal text with acrylic paint. Numbers are forced onto visual stages, assigned new values, and made to represent emotions or human relationships. Layers of pigment are added with her hands then partially removed with cloth to become a lens through which she shares her stories and invites viewers to reflect upon their own.

Lori Anne Boocks earned a BFA from Old Dominion University in 1992. Her influences include Cy Twombly, Anselm Kiefer, Nancy Spero, and Chinese calligraphy. Her work is included in private collections in California, Georgia, and the Metro DC area. Recent solo and group shows include the University of Maryland University College, Delaplaine Visual Arts Center, and Maryland Federation of Art. She lives and paints in Germantown, Maryland and is represented by Studio Gallery in Washington, DC and Adah Rose Gallery in Kensington, Maryland.  For more about her work, including a video on process and content, visit www.lorianneboocks.com.
