Soul on Fire The Musical at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts

A COURAGEOUS MUSICAL PRODUCTION USES ARTS TO CHALLENGE SEXUAL ASSAULT

Every two minutes, another American is sexually assaulted. The US Department of Justice’s National Crime Victimization Survey estimates an average of 237,868 victims (age 12 or older) of rape and sexual assault each year. Playwright and composer, Tyrone Stanley takes an ugly memory of sexual abuse and transforms it into an opportunity for healing with his dynamic new stage production, Soul on Fire The Musical, set to make its DC debut this summer.

The story takes audiences into the mind of a young girl who decides to take matters into her own hands when justice fails to address the crime that has shattered her life. Broken and desperate, Kisha must prove her story is true—she was raped by a socially-prominent figure who, in the eyes of her family and utopian community, can do no wrong. Kisha’s story is the story of those who  never tell; the statistics for unreported and unprosecuted rape are staggering. Sexual assault is a national and global crisis. Soul on Fire can help us all BREAK THE SILENCE!
