Wild Montgomery Programs: Blockhouse Point

Explore WILD Montgomery County with
a Park Naturalist or a Natural Resource Specialist. Discover beautiful public places close to home and
learn fascinating natural history from Park experts. All programs are FREE and
require advance registration. Please print your ParkPASS confirmation receipt
for specific directions to the meeting spot and other instructions. In
1861, Union soldiers occupied a camp near Muddy Branch Stream off what is now
River Rd. Watching from overlooks high above the Potomac River, their job was
to prevent Confederate raiders from crossing the Potomac and destroying canal
locks and boats. Today, Blockhouse Point Conservation Park preserves this area
which is also home to some diverse and special plant communities. Join a Park
Naturalist on a 3-4 mile loop walk along the upland trails and out to the Potomac
overlook. You will feel like you have left the city far behind as we search for
signs of spring in this small gem of a park. Meet at main entrance parking area
off of River Rd (about 1.5 miles past Pennyfield Lock Rd). Please register all
attendees. Locust Grove Nature Center.  301-765-8660, www.LocustGroveNature.org. Register at
ParkPASS.org (268651). 18 & up
