Pochter: 'Always Appreciate the Good Deeds People Do'

Shortly before he was killed in Egypt, Andrew Pochter shared some words of wisdom with a boy whom he had counseled at summer camp.

Less than one month before he was killed while watching a political protest in Egypt (on June 28), Andrew Pochter, 21, of Chevy Chase, wrote a letter to a Baltimore boy whom Pochter had mentored at a summer camp for the past few years.

In the letter (dated June 10), Pochter congratulated the boy, 12, for completing the camp program, and apologized for not being able to attend his camp graduation.

Pochter also wrote in the letter about what it's like to live in Egypt, where he was spending the summer teaching English to Egyptian children. The Washington Post published the letter last week. Here is a quote from it:

"Egypt is hazardous right now because the country is feeling the consequences of a enormous political revolution. I lose electricity and water all of the time but that's okay because I have many Egyptian friends to help take care of me. When I am in trouble, they take care of me and when they are in trouble, I always take care of them. Good friends do not come easily, but as a rule, I always appreciate the good deeds people do for me even if I don't know them well. What is most important is that I am trying to do my best for others. I want to surround myself with good people!"

Pochter's funeral was held last Friday at the Washington National Cathedral, Patch reported.
