Ten selected as finalists in poetry contest

Ten finalists from the DC-area have been selected for the Bethesda Literary Festival's Poetry Contest, produced by the Bethesda Urban Partnership.

April 11, 2013 (Bethesda, MD) – Ten poets from across the region have been named finalists in the Bethesda Literary Festival’s Poetry Contest. The Bethesda Urban Partnership, Inc. welcomed writers to submit an original poem on any topic to the Poetry Contest for a chance to win $500 and be published on The Writer’s Center’s “First Person Plural” blog.

Winners of the contest, judged by former Maryland Poet Laureate Michael Collier, will be announced at a reception at 5pm, Saturday, April 20 at Gallery B, 7700 Wisconsin Ave., Suite E, Bethesda.

In addition to $500 and being published on The Writer’s Center “First Person Plural” blog, the first place winner will also receive a gift certificate to The Writer’s Center. The second place winner will receive $250; the third place winner will receive $150; and honorable mentions will be awarded a $25 gift card. All winners will be honored at a special event during the Bethesda Literary Festival, April 19-21, 2013. Winning poems will also be posted on the Bethesda Urban Partnership website.

Former Maryland Poet Laureate, Michael Collier is also the director of the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, and teaches in the creative writing program at the University of Maryland. His books of poetry include The Clasp and Other PoemsThe Folded HeartThe NeighborThe Ledge, which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, and Dark Wild Realm. Collier is the editor of two acclaimed anthologies of poetry, The Wesleyan Tradition: Four Decades of American Poetry and The New American Poets: A Bread Loaf Anthology, and a translation of Medea. He is also the author of a collection of essays, Make Us Wave Back.

Michael Collier has received numerous awards for his poetry, including fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, the Alice Fay di Castagnola Award, an Academy Award in Literature, a Pushcart Prize, the Thomas Watson Fellowship, and a “Discovery”/The Nation award.

In addition to writing contests, The Bethesda Literary Festival celebrates literature with three days of free events featuring novelists, journalists, poets and children’s events. All events take place throughout downtown Bethesda. For more information visit www.bethesda.org.

The Bethesda Literary Festival is produced by the Bethesda Urban Partnership (BUP), the creator and sponsor of Taste of Bethesda, Imagination Bethesda, the Bethesda Literary Festival, a free Summer Concert Series, Winter Wonderland and Bethesda Outdoor Movies: Stars on the Avenue. Bethesda Urban Partnership also manages the Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District. The beautification of downtown Bethesda’s parks, streets and sidewalks is also maintained by BUP.
