Public to Bid Farewell to Schaefer Next Week

The body of former Gov. William Donald Schaefer, who died Monday at the age of 89, will take a tour of Baltimore landmarks next week before he is laid to rest.

Schaefer, who helped revitalize the city, will visit Harborplace, the National Aquarium and the stadiums, said Michael Golden, who served as Schaefer's press secretary in Annapolis.

Schaefer will lie in repose from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, April 25, in the State House rotunda. The casket will then be transported to Baltimore, passing several of the city's landmarks associated with his four terms as mayor. A complete list of landmarks will be released later today, Golden said.

Schaefer's casket is expected to arrive at City Hall at 5 p.m. Monday, where it will lie in repose until 9 p.m., Golden said. The public can visit the casket again from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday as well.

The funeral will be held next Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Old St. Paul's Church at Charles and Saratoga streets in Baltimore. Golden said arrangements are still being finalized.

Interment will be in Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery, where Schaefer will be placed in a crypt alongside Hilda Mae Snoops, his longtime companion, Golden said.
