We've assembled a weekly calendar of kid-friendly activities and new places to try out with children.

Each week, we'll give you the info on the five best family activities or events for the week.

You're time-pressed enough, so we're happy to do the research and find the best things to do and places to go, both locally and within reasonable striking distance.

This week, pick and choose from a wide array of events, from live theater to St. Patrick's Day celebrations.

 

• CELEBRATE ST. PATRICK’S DAY EARLY

Where/When:   4931 Elm Street; 4844 Cordell Ave, The Irish Inn at Glen Echo, 6119 Tulane Ave.

Why Go: St. Patrick is said to have used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Christian concept of the Holy Trinity. This day in his honor is a great opportunity to learn about Irish culture and traditions.  Take the kids to a pub this weekend, BEFORE the crowds descend, for Irish music and food.

THE CAPITOL STEPS 

Where/When:  Walt Whitman High School 7100 Whittier Blvd, Bethesda, 7p.m. March 13

Why Go: Join the Capitol Steps, a Washington-based troupe of one-time Congressional staffers, for an evening of music and political satire. Proceeds benefit the Post Prom Party.

Pricing: $30 general admission, $25 MCPS students and teachers

 

MUSIC TOGETHER

Where/When:  Davis Library,  6400 Democracy Blvd., 3p.m. March 12

Why Go: Music is for everyone. Program includes songs, movement and music for newborns through four year olds and their caregivers.

Pricing: free

 

 BETHESDA PLAY-IN-A-DAY 

Where/When: 4908 Auburn Ave, Bethesda MD 8p.m. March 12

Why Go:  Attend a unique theater event that tasks six theater companies with writing, directing and performing a 10 minute play within 24 hours. It’s a fascinating look at the process of live theater.

Pricing: $15, recommended only for older children and adults.

 

THE LARAMIE PROJECT

Where/When: auditorium, 4301 East-West Highway, 7:30p.m. March 11, 12 & 18 and 2p.m. March 19

Why Go: A challenging and important night out for families with children ages 13 and up, The Laramie Project is often used as a method to teach about prejudice and tolerance. It focuses on the reaction to the homophobic murder of a college student in Laramie, Wyoming in 1998. The play is divided into three acts, and 14 actors portray more than seventy characters in a series of short scenes.

Pricing: $10 at the door
