Accident Involving School Bus Closes Whittier Boulevard

The bus was not carrying children, according to rescue officials, but a woman in a passenger vehicle was seriously injured following the crash.

A three-vehicle accident involving a school bus left a woman seriously injured and closed Whittier Boulevard at River Road Wednesday afternoon, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue officials.

The school bus, which had been headed to Walt Whitman High School, was not carrying children, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokeswoman Beth Anne Nesselt.

Rescue officials responded to River Road and Whittier Boulevard around 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, Nesselt said. A woman, who needed to be extricated from her car suffered serious injuries, and was transported to the hospital in stable condition, Nesselt said.

The driver of the second vehicle was transported to the hospital for an evaluation, and the school bus driver, who was the only person aboard the bus, was evaluated but not transported, Nesselt said.

Shortly before 3 p.m., a portion of Whittier Boulevard was closed and motorists were unable to access River Road from Whittier. Rescue officials were clearing the scene, Nesselt said.
