Apartment Fire Displaces 50 Families

Montgomery County fire officials say 50 families have been displaced from their homes after a two-alarm fire in Aspen Hill.

Fire department spokesman Pete Piringer says firefighters were called to Manor Apartments on the 14300 block of Georgia Avenue on Thursday evening. They found heavy smoke coming from the three-story building.

Piringer told CBS DC it took dozens of firefighters about a half hour to put out the fire. He says medics evaluated an 11-year-old boy at the scene, but no one was injured.

While the fire was contained to the building where it started, authorities had to shut off utilities to other buildings, displacing 50 families. Investigators believe the fire was caused by faulty electric wiring in the walls that sparked combustible material.

The blaze caused $650,000 in damage, plus the loss of $350,000 in content, Piringer says.
