Pedestrian Struck by Vehicle in Chevy Chase Remains in Serious Condition

Alice Ann Winkler was struck by a minivan Tuesday at Westport Road and Saratoga Avenue.

A pedestrian struck by a vehicle Tuesday morning at the intersection of Westport Road and Saratoga Avenue remained in serious condition Wednesday afternoon, according to a Montgomery County police news release.

Alice Ann Winkler, 50, of the 5200 block of Saratoga Avenue in Chevy Chase, was walking near her home about 8 a.m. Tuesday when she was struck by a 2012 Toyota Sienna driven by Pablo Martinez Varela, police said. Varela, 51, also of the 5200 block of Saratoga Avenue, remained at the scene and provided information to investigators, the release said.

Winkler was walking on Westport Road just east of Saratoga Avenue when she was hit by the minvan as the vehicle turned from northbound Saratoga Avenue east on to Westport Road, according to police.

Winkler was taken via helicopter to Baltimore's R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, county police spokeswoman Officer Rebecca Innocenti told Patch Tuesday. Winkler remained in serious condition on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The county police investigation is ongoing, the release said.
