Child Freed From Locked Car Near Westbard Giant

As temperatures soared Wednesday, a child was freed after becoming accidentally locked in a car for several minutes.

As temperatures soared Wednesday afternoon, a child became accidentally locked in a vehicle near the Giant at 5400 Westbard Avenue, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue.

The child was freed within minutes, and wasn't harmed, according to Fire and Rescue spokesman Capt. Oscar Garcia.

Rescuers responded around 1:25p.m. A mother who had been unloading groceries into her car with her two-year-old child inside had accidentally closed the door of the car with the keys still inside, Garcia said. The mother immediately called for help, Garcia said.

With the region under a heat advisory and temperatures soaring into the upper 90s, rescuers responded immediately, Garcia said. "That's why we were concerned, and I'm sure that's why she called right away," Garcia said.

The child was locked in the car about three or four minutes and didn't need to be transported to the hospital, Garcia said.
