Construction Worker Found Unresponsive at Arlington Road Safeway

Fire and Rescue can't confirm whether the worker was electrocuted.

Update, 5:40 p.m.: Safeway spokesman Greg TenEyck confirmed the man injured at Safeway this afternoon is a contractor and not a Safeway employee. "Safeway is deeply saddened by this tragedy," TenEyck said. "Our hearts and thoughts and prayers go out to his family and loved ones."

Original post, 3:10 p.m.: A construction worker was found unresponsive Monday afternoon at the Safeway under construction at the corner of Arlington Road and Bradley Boulevard, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue.

The man, in his late 40s, was found near an electrical panel shortly before 1:30 p.m.

Fire and Rescue can't confirm whether the man was electrocuted, according to Fire and Rescue spokesman Capt. Oscar Garcia. The man had been working in the area of the electrical service into the building, Garcia said.

The man sustained life-threatening injuries and was unconscious and unresponsive when Fire and Rescue responded, Garcia said. He was transported to a local hospital.

The Safeway is in its final stages of construction and is due to open Oct. 13.

Pepco and the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) have been notified, Garcia said. "This appears to be a work-related injury," Garcia said.
