Garbage Truck Catches Fire Near Wilson, Old Georgetown

Blaze affecting rush traffic in downtown Bethesda.

A garbage truck caught fire near the intersection of Wilson Lane and Old Georgetown Road in Bethesda Friday afternoon, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue.

Firefighters responded to the scene shortly after 3:30 p.m., according to Capt. Oscar Garcia, a Fire and Rescue spokesman. Units were attempting to move the truck to a nearby location to extinguish the fire, Garcia said, but the traffic was getting worse.

"You can bet Edgemoor, Old Georgetown, Wilson, all that's backed up," Garcia said. "We've got traffic stopped while we extinguish all of the fire."
