Group of Robbers Takes Over Cartier, Escapes with Loot

Police say the expensive jewelry store was taken over by robbers mid-morning Tuesday.

Update, Tuesday, April 30, 4:30 p.m.: The suspects were wearing gloves and masks for the Chevy Chase Cartier robbery, and were in control of the store for less than one minute, according to a Montgomery County police news statement.

While they were in Cartier, they broke a display case at the rear of the store and removed property from the case. Four employees were inside of Cartier at the time of the robbery, but were not injured, the police statement added.

Original post, Tuesday, April 30, 1 p.m.: A group of robbers briefly took over Chevy Chase's Cartier jewelry store on Tuesday morning, smashing display cases, stealing property and fleeing the store, according to Montgomery County Police Department Capt. Paul Starks. No injuries were reported.

The heist took place at 11:08 a.m. along the high-end retail corridor colloquially known as the Rodeo Drive of the East Coast. No weapon had been confirmed as of noon, Starks added. The number of robbers was not known and there was no information on how many people were in the store at the time.

"By their number and by their aggressive actions, they took control of the store," Starks said.

The suspects fled the store on foot, then got into a late model black Dodge Charger and headed toward Washington, DC, Starks said. There were no details on the number of people involved or what type of property was taken.

The vehicle last was seen heading southbound on South Capitol Street in DC, said Gwendolyn Crump, spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, DC.

The getaway vehicle has a Virginia license tag (No. JWR 459) on the front and an Illinois tag (No. P563888) on the back, Crump added.
