Huguely Breaks Down in Court

While the video of his interrogation by police played in the courtroom, George Huguely—on-trial for the killing of Yeardley Love—put his hands over his face and cried.

The first week of George Huguely's trial for the killing of Yeardley Love ended on Friday, Feb. 10, with Huguely, 24 and a Chevy Chase, MD, native, breaking down in a Charlottesville, VA, Circuit Court room as jury members were shown a video recording of Huguely being interrogated by police shortly after Love's lifeless body was found in the early morning hours of May 3, 2010.

In the courtroom, "George Huguely doubled over, put his hands over his face and cried," as the video, which was angled so that only the jury—and not members of the press or public—played, ABC News reported.

In the video, Huguely reacted in disbelief when he was told that Love, of Cockeysville, MD, was dead.

' "She's dead? How is she dead?' Huguely asked repeatedly [in the video]. 'Please, please tell me she is not dead,' " ABC News reported.

Love was found in her Charlottesville, VA, apartment just hours after Huguely had visited her. Love and Huguely were fourth-year University of Virginia students and lacrosse players, and had been in a volatile relationship.

"Prosecutors allege that an enraged Huguely allegedly kicked through the door of Love's bedroom the night she died and shook her, banging her head against the wall, before leaving her bleeding. A bloody Love was later found face-down on her bed by a roommate. Her face was covered in scrapes and bruises, according to a police warrant, and her right eye was swollen shut," ABC News reported.

But, on the video tape, Huguely "said the two were wrestling on the floor, but that he never struck her," and that she had repeatedly banged her head against the wall, ABC News added.

The defense, The Baltimore Sun reported, has argued that the bruises seen in pictures from the crime scene and autopsy were actually caused by rescuers performing chest compressions and other attempts to save Love's life, and that a drug Love was taking to treat attention disorders could have caused a cardiac problem that contributed to her death, The Washington Post reported.

But, "on Thursday, Dr. Danny Mistry, the primary care physician for UVA sports teams, told the court that Love was an athlete in excellent shape, ABC News reported.

"When the doctor was asked if there was any medical reason Love should have passed away on May 3, 2010, he said, 'No...She was in very good shape,' Mistry said," ABC News added.

Huguely's lacrosse teammates "have said he drank excessively and increasingly in the weeks before Love died, and on the police tape, Huguely told a detective he had had more than a dozen beers and wine at a golf course, his home, a restaurant and a bar before going to Love’s home," The Post reported.

Teammates have even said that they were thinking of staging an intervention, after the lacrosse season was over, to get Huguely to stop drinking so much, The Post reported in its video coverage.
