Pedestrian Dies After River Road Collision

No word yet on pedestrian's condition; River Road closed between Little Falls Parkway and Willard.

Update, 7:40p.m.: The elderly woman who was struck by a car as she was walking on River Road has died at Suburban Hospital, Montgomery County police reported in a news release Thursday evening.

Police identified the victim as Nancy Jane Laulis, 76, of the 700 block of Long Street in Bridgeport, West Virginia. She had been walking outside the crosswalk and was struck by a 1979 Chevrolet Caprice Classic that was traveling eastbound on River Road. 

The driver of the vehicle, Richard D. King, 67, of the 4200 block of Cathedral Avenue in Northwest Washington, D.C., remained at the scene.

Police are asking anyone with  information about the incident to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 301-840-2435. 

Update, 5:10p.m.: Police have confirmed that the driver of the vehicle that struck the elderly pedestrian stayed on the scene.

Update, 3:40p.m.: The pedestrian struck on River Road this afternoon was unconscious and unresponsive while being transported to the hospital, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman Capt. Oscar Garcia.

Montgomery County Police said the victim was a 74-year-old female. The woman was not killed, but was seriously injured and was transported to Suburban hospital.

Garcia described the injuries as  life-threatening.

The collision happened on River Road near Greystone Street, between Willard Avenue and Little Falls Parkway. River Road between Willard and Little Falls remains closed, and impacts on rush traffic are expected.

Garcia said he believed the pedestrian was struck in the eastbound lanes of River Road.

Original Post: A pedestrian has been struck in the 5000 block of River Road in Bethesda, according to Montgomery County police.

The pedestrian was struck around 2:30, according to police spokesman Howard Hersh. It wasn't immediately known what the pedestrian's condition was or whether the pedestrian was a man or a woman.

Around 3p.m., Montgomery County Fire and Rescue reported on its Twitter page that River Road was closed between Little Falls Parkway and Willard due to the collision.

A Fire and Rescue spokesman couldn't immediately be reached.

The collision marks the second pedestrian struck in Bethesda this week. Monday, and sustained serious injuries.
