Second District Police Commander To Be Tapped For Promotion

Capt. Russell Hamill expected to be nominated to role of assistant police chief.

Capt. Russell Hamill, commander of Montgomery County Police’s second district, is expected to be nominated for the role of Assistant Police Chief in charge of the Investigative Services Bureau, the Washington Post reported.

The second district, which is headquartered in Bethesda, encompasses Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Kensington, and portions of Rockville and Silver Spring. If the nomination is approved, Hamill will fill a vacancy left by the retirement of Assistant Chief Drew J. Tracy, the Post reported.

Tracy retired Sept. 1.

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett (D) is expected to nominate Hamill for the new role, the Post reported, and the nomination must be approved by the County Council.

A lifelong county resident, Hamill began his career with Montgomery County police in 1986 and has headed the second district since August of 2007, according to an online bio.

It’s not yet known who Hamill’s replacement will be, according to a Montgomery County police spokeswoman.
