UPDATE: Mother Charged For Leaving Girl, 6, Unattended

Girl was found by responders after setting off a smoke alarm attempting to cook, police said.

Update, Jan. 19, 7:19 p.m.: Wafa Mutie Abudib, 38, the mother charged with leaving her six-year-old child unattended in Bethesda Wednesday, faces a penalty of $500 and/or 30 days in jail, Montgomery County police said in a press release.

The child set off a smoke alarm after attempting to make food in a toaster oven.

Abudib was issued a criminal citation charging her with confining a child under the age of eight to a dwelling while she was absent, according to the release.

Wafa left the child to attend an exercise class and go to the grocery store, police said.

Update, Jan. 19, 10:20 a.m.: The mother of a six-year-old girl who was found unattended in a Bethesda apartment Wednesday left her alone to attend an exercise class and go to the grocery store, according to Montgomery County police.

The child set off a smoke alarm when she burned bread in a toaster oven, a Fire and Rescue spokesman told the Washington Post. There was no fire, the spokesman told the Post, but police said there was "a lot of smoke" when they responded to the apartment, in the 6400 block of Rock Forest Drive.

The girl left the apartment and was found by a neighbor, who called 911.

The girl was taken to a police station, where she stayed until officers could contact her mother, according to a police spokeswoman. The woman was charged with leaving a child unattended.

The child was returned to her mother, police said.

Original Post, Jan. 18, 11:30 p.m.: A six-year-old girl was found alone in a Bethesda apartment after officials responded to a smoke alarm, ABC7 is reporting.

Police told ABC7 the girl had been attempting to make something in a toaster oven when smoke set off the alarm and the girl left the apartment.

Police said the girl's mother had left her alone in their home in the 6400 block of Rock Forest Drive for about an hour and a half.

A neighbor saw the girl and called 911, according to the report.
