Neurosurgeon Ben Carson told a conservative conference in Washington Friday the Affordable Care Act is like slavery because it makes all Americans "subservient to the government."

Carson, speaking at the 2013 Values Voter Summit, blasted the plan known as Obamacare that was at the center of a Capitol Hill political fight, which resulted in the shutdown of the federal government.

"You know Obamacare is really I think the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery," Carson said Friday. "And it is in a way, it is slavery in a way, because it is making all of us subservient to the government, and it was never about health care. It was about control."

Carson was recently hired by Fox News as a contributor, according to the Huffington Post. He served as the director of pediatric surgery at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center for 39 years.
