Bethesda Named ‘Bicycle-Friendly Community’

As the bicycle craze continues to sweep the nation, another 27 cities have been given the distinction of being “bicycle-friendly” – Bethesda among them.

The League of American Bicyclists last week recognized Bethesda and the city of Rockville for their commitment to bicycling. The program advocates for transportation sustainability and bicycle safety in cities. 

The two towns earned a bronze status on the organization’s list of the country’s most bicycle-friendly places. The bronze award level recognizes Bethesda’s bicycling promotion, education programs, infrastructure and pro-bicycling policies, according to a release.

“I am so pleased to see Bethesda earn this distinction,” Roger Berliner, Montgomery County Council president and District 1 representative, said in a press release.  “Bethesda is a terrific example of the kind of bicycle-friendly environment that makes places more livable and more attractive for new residents and businesses.”

The recognition comes just after the Montgomery County Department of Transportation outlined its plans for of Capital Bikeshare at a meeting of Western Montgomery County Citizens Advisory Board
