New Bethesda Post Office Planned For 6900 Wisconsin Avenue

Post offices at Arlington Road and Wisconsin Avenue will close by June, The Gazette reports.

A new Bethesda post office will be located at 6900 Wisconsin Avenue, The Gazette reported this week, citing a U.S. Postal Service spokeswoman.

The postal service announced last summer it planned to close the downtown Bethesda offices at Arlington Road and Wisconsin Avenue and . The move is part of a nationwide effort by USPS to consolidate or close post offices in the face of declining revenues.

USPS will vacate the offices at 7001 Arlington Road and 7400 Wisconsin Avenue by June, according to The Gazette.

The new retail location is “as close as we could get” to the current post office at 7400 Wisconsin, Dennis Perry, a real estate specialist for the USPS eastern facilities service office, told Patch in January. Parking will be available at the new location, The Gazette reported.

A new residential and retail development is planned for the Arlington Road site, The development has been dubbed “Dwell Bethesda,” according to The Gazette.

At community meetings held last summer, residents drove home the importance of keeping the new post office in a convenient downtown location close to Metro. But in a recent blog post, Bethesda blogger Robert Dyer wrote the new location may not be easily accessible for downtown Bethesda pedestrians.

What do you think of the new location for Bethesda’s post office? Is it less convenient than the current locations? How will the post office consolidation affect you? Tell us in the comments.

We have maintained a PO Box for 12 years at the Wisconsin Ave branch because of its central location. This change will be a huge inconvenience in added time and walking distance.

Thanks for commenting, KMA. How much longer do you think the walk will be for you to the new location?

Does this mean that the developer will demolish the historic post office building at 7400 Wisconsin? That would be a huge loss for Bethesda. It already has a shortage of history and a glut of soulless and boring modern developments.

They'll need an exorcist when they knock down the Arlington Road facility. While the current staff are a vast improvement over those in the past, Arlington Road was known for having THE most rude employees in the USPS system. USPS seems to have dispersed the employees with the attitude issues.

What possible benefit - other than (I assume) free parking? - does 6900 Wisconsin Avenue offer? The old post office is lovely, historic, and conveniently located near the Metro, with a parking garage nearby.

Is that how you get your porn videos?

The new location is much less convenient especially for the handicapped. It will much more difficult to send packages. Georgette
