Poll: Americans Tell Congress, 'Get Out!'

A Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll found bipartisan support for replacing Congress.

Washington is an unpopular place with most Americans, a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll found this week. Just about everyone hates Congress, members of both parties want to replace their congressional members and a bunch of people said the country was on the wrong track.

  • Congress’ disapproval rating hit a new high: 83 percent.

  • Most Republicans (59 percent) and half of Democrats said they want to replace every member of Congress, including their own representatives.

  • A lot of people support Obamacare. Most Democrats (77 percent), many Independents (45 percent) and even a few Republicans (17 percent) think Republicans should stop trying to block the Affordable Care Act.

  • Men are more optimistic about race relations than women. Just 45 percent of women think people in America are judged by “the content of their character, not the color of the skin,” compared to 63 percent of men.

  • Hispanic people are the most optimistic about race, with 60 percent polled saying “race relations are good,” compared to just 38 percent of black people polled and 52 percent of white people polled.

  • Southern, rural, evangelical and white people who didn’t go to college are really unhappy with the state of America. Most Southerners (75 percent) think the country is on the wrong track, as do people in rural areas (74 percent), evangelicals (76 percent) and white people without a college degree (72 percent).
