Bethesda Student Wins $10,000 Scholarship from Northrop Grumman

Alexander Pomerenk received a merit-based scholarship of $10,000.

Alexander Pomerenk, a recent graduate of Walt Whitman High School, has been named the Montgomery County winner in the 11th annual Northrop Grumman Engineering Scholars competition, according to a statement from Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems.

"The statewide scholarship program is aimed at supporting promising high school seniors who intend to pursue a career in an engineering-related field," the statement read.

Pomerenk received a merit-based scholarship of $10,000 during an awards reception and dinner hosted by Northrop Grumman on June 24. He plans to study mechanical engineering at Cornell University.

"The Northrop Grumman Engineering Scholars program is aimed at supporting promising high school seniors who intend to pursue a career in an engineering-related field. Candidates must plan to attend an accredited college or university school of engineering as a full-time student in an approved engineering program. The funds can be used for tuition, books, room and board, and lab fees," the statement reported.

Altogether, 24 students in Maryland were selected for the scholarship (for a total of $240,000 in scholarship money).

A committee of Northrop Grumman employees selected scholarship awardees. To be eligible, each applicant had to be a resident of Maryland and a graduating senior in spring 2013 from a public or accredited private high school in Maryland. Applicants also had to have a minimum composite SAT score of 1,700 or ACT score of 27 and a minimum GPA of 3.5. The committee also took into consideration work experience, community involvement and extracurricular activities, the statement added.
