The Dome: From the the Pantheon to the U.S. Capitol
The Pantheon in Rome, dedicated to all the ancient Roman gods, is one of the most copied buildings in the history of architecture. A marvel of Roman engineering, it used arches and vaults, concrete construction, coffers, space, and light to create a new kind of architectural experience and symbolic form. This domed rotunda was adapted throughout the Middles Ages and in modern times to new purposes and functions. This class will explore the dome from Rome to later adaptations for churches, for mosques, and, in Washington, for the U.S. Capitol.
