Possible Arson at Walt Whitman High School

An incendiary device was thrown through a classroom window late Friday.

At approximately 11:45 p.m. Friday, an incendiary device was thrown through a classroom window at Walt Whitman High School causing a minor fire which activated the sprinkler system, according to information provided by Dana Tofig, spokesman for Montgomery County Public Schools and Alan Goodwin, the school's principal.

In an email sent to the PTSA and parents, Goodwin wrote that damage from smoke and water is limited to the classrooms on the first and second floor. Work crews are at the school making repairs, removing the water and clearing smoke out of the building, he added.

Goodwin assured the school's community that the school will be open on Monday morning.

Tofig also confirmed the principal's assessment, stating that "While there is some clean up work to be done, we expect no disruption to the school schedule."

Montgomery County police and fire/rescue departments are currently investigating this as an arson, according to Goodwin.

Police are asking anyone with information about this incident to contact the department's non-emergency number at 301-279-8000.
