Report: Can Montgomery County Public Schools Handle 10,000 More Kids?

The Washington Post: Enrollment projections spark concern about the need for more space.

About 10,000 new students will enroll in Montgomery County Public Schools over the next five years. With the new kids come new crowding concerns, The Washington Post reported.

School officials told the newspaper that the need to increase capacity at county schools exceeds the money available to the school system. 

“It’s like a triage,” Bruce Crispell, director of long-range planning for MCPS, told The Post. “You take care of the worst space deficits first.”

County schools are holding classes in about 400 portable classrooms, The Post reported. Three new portables at Arcola Elementary School at the start of the school year ignited fear from parents about the impact of overcrowding on the school, Wheaton Patch reported.
