Ledecky Breaks Record, Laps Competitors

Bethesda swimmer Katie Ledecky broke an American record by 9 seconds in the women's 1,650-yard freestyle at the Winter National Championships on Wednesday.

Bethesda Olympian Katie Ledecky, 16, is in the headlines again for breaking a swimming record.

On Wednesday, Dec. 11, Ledecky, a Stone Ridge School junior, beat two-time Olympian Katie Hoff’s American record in the women’s 1,650-yard freestyle by 9 seconds—with a time of 15 minutes and 15.17 seconds—during the 2013 Winter National Championships at the University of Tennessee’s Allan Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville, TN, The Washington Post and USA Swimming reported.

The 1,650-yard freestyle race is close to a mile long. (A mile is 1,760 yards in length.)
