Residents Brave the Heat For AT&T National

It's undeniably hot out on the golf course at Congressional Country Club. I'm going to take the editorial liberty to say that.

But that hasn't stopped residents from Maryland, Virginia and DC from coming out in droves to see Tiger Woods. Those who came to the U.S. Open in 2011 were denied the opportunity when Woods pulled out of the tournament, but the loyals on Friday got a chance to see him shoot three under for the day and two under for the tournament so far.

Woods isn't the only draw for golf lovers.

"It sure beats working," said Jason Sutphin, a Fairfax, Va.,  resident lounging in the shade at the tournament.

Sutphin came out with two other men. They'd given each other tickets for Father's Day.

"We bought them for each other - with our wives' approval, of course," Jose Santiago, of Ashburn, Va., said.

The tournament was attractive because the three men got a chance to get out and walk a course that is normally closed to the public.

"And the tickets were affordable," Sutphin said.

Gallery passes are $25 per day and allows patrons access to the Congressional Country Club grounds to watch the tournament and follow the players. Grounds tickets per day for the U.S. Open a year ago were double the cost.

Other attendees made the tournament a family affair. Doug Root, of Arlington, Va., brought out his father-in-law Jim Gyuricza, of Oakton, Va.

"We followed Tiger for a few holes," Root said. "It's just great to be out here."

The heat didn't deter either man.

"We've been tring to find shade whenever possible Root said.

Gyuricza didn't mind the heat at all.

"It's never too hot to be on a golf course," he said.
