Would You Pay $25 to See a Movie in 'Luxury'?

If you’ve ever had to choose between seeing a new movie in theaters or watching an old one in the comfort of your home, you may appreciate what new “luxury” theater chains are doing. 

Several Washington- and Florida-based cinema companies have created luxury movie theaters—complete with reclining chairs, stadium seating, pick-your-own-seat reservations and food and beverage service right at your seat. 

Three of these companies—ArcLight Cinemas, iPic Theaters and Silverspot Cinema—have plans to build theaters in the Montgomery County area, reported Patch and The Washington Post. 

“I think one of the things we’ve seen as an industry over time is that as people age, their movie-going habits change,” Patrick Corcoran, director of media and research for the National Association of Theatre Owners, told The Post.

Two of the theaters are planned for Bethesda, and one is slated for North Bethesda. The ArcLight theater will be , and the , Patch reported.

An  to the first phase of . The high-end theater chain offers in-house fine dining, reclining seats, pillows and blankets.

Websites for the theaters boast online seat reservations, seats that are 3 inches wider than standard with 46 inches of leg room, “black box” design, no commercials, few trailers, 15 more inches of space between rows and no late seating for fewer disruptions.

The theaters offer an array of the usual films (Dark Knight Rises, Magic Mike, Ted, The Amazing Spiderman), as well as some you won’t find in your typical theater, like operas and old classics, to appeal to different audiences.

Adult ticket prices range from around $15 to $20, and according to its website, for $27 at iPic you get a “reserved, plush micro-suede, fully reclining chair, with a pillow and blanket, popcorn and in-cinema food and beverage service.”
