A Brief Look at Silver Spring, MD

Silver Spring, MD is a middle-class suburb located north of Washington D.C. The ethnically diverse population has reached over 71,000, making Silver Spring the 4th largest city within Maryland.

Properties in the city vary, and include single-family homes, townhouses, and condominiums.

Silver Spring boasts a great education system, many recreational opportunities, shopping venues, and a highly diverse dining experience. Because of this and the easy access to urban amenities, Silver Spring is an exceptional place to live.

Climate

The climate in Silver Spring is considered subtropical, and has humid and hot summers and winters that are short and cool. The city sees an average of 87 degrees in summer and 23 degrees in winter. Annual precipitation averages 40 inches and snowfall averages 22 inches.

Education

Silver Spring is served by the Montgomery County Public Schools system. This public school system is one of only a handful of school systems to receive the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award for excellence. Within the Silver Spring area is 37 elementary schools, 9 middle schools, and 8 high schools, as well as a handful of private schools. Montgomery College is a great postsecondary institution in Silver Spring.

Recreation

Residents have many choices when it comes to recreational activities. There are 3 nearby golf courses, 2 of which are 18-hole courses and 1 that is a 9-hole course. There are also more than 10 parks, with amenities that include playgrounds, hiking and biking trails, and sports courts and fields. For family fun during the hot summer months, the Silver Spring Ice Skating Rink can’t be beat.

Shopping and Dining

Silver Spring has 2 main shopping centers, The Blairs and Downtown Silver Spring. There are familiar stores such as Marshall’s, Men’s Wearhouse, and American Apparel, but there are also locally owned shops.

Most of which can be found along the Redline Metro System that connects many of the major, metropolitan centers around the area.

Dining options include delis, cafes, and pubs, as well as ethnically diverse fare from countries like Ethiopia, Greece, and Jamaica.

Points of Interest

1. Acorn Park


Acorn Park is located at the site where, in 1840, Francis Preston Blair discovered the spring from which Silver Spring was named. Though the spring is now dry, the area is still recognized and celebrated within the city for what it stands for.

2. Silver Spring B & O Railroad Station


The first railroad station was built in 1878, but was subsequently rebuilt in 1945. The station is listed on the National Register of Historic Place and is a place that should be visited.

3. AFI Silver Theater & Cultural Center


The AFI Silver Theater & Cultural Center is a place that is dedicated to film and the arts. There are three theaters located on the premise, and many educational opportunities exist. Panels, discussions, and director interviews are conducted regularly after movie screenings. This is a wonderful destination for fans of the film industry.
