Water Main Break Closes Wisconsin Avenue's Southbound Lanes

Wisconsin Avenue's southbound lanes closed Tuesday afternoon due to a water main break.

All southbound lanes of Wisconsin Avenue were closed between Battery Lane and Woodmont Avenue in Bethesda on Tuesday afternoon and going into the evening rush, the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission reported.

"WSSC crews are working to repair a broken 8-inch water main that's 89 years old," according to a WSSC statement.

"That is just one of 69 mains currently in need of repair," WSSC added.

"Sudden temperature changes, such as what we've experienced in recent days, can stress pipes, creating conditions where breaks or leaks are more likely." On Tuesday, "the Potomac River—one source of water for WSSC—hit a season low of 33.1 degrees," WSSC reported.

The southbound lanes of Wisconsin Avenue between Woodmont Avenue and Battery Lane were closed by 1 p.m. on Tuesday, according to a county alert message.
