Weekend Metrorail Update: Red Line Stations Closed, Labor Day Changes

A few Red Line stations will be closed, and trains will operate on a Sunday schedule on Labor Day.

Get set for some Red Line Metro delays this weekend, as free shuttle buses replace trains between the Rhode Island Avenue and Forest Glen stations from 10 p.m. Friday to closing on Monday, Sept. 2, according to Metro's website.

The Silver Spring, Takoma and Brookland stations will be closed all weekend, and the Fort Totten station will be open for Green and Yellow lines only, Metro reported.

Red Line trains will operate as follows, Metro reported:

  • Between Shady Grove and Rhode Island Avenue: Every 10 minutes between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. and at regular weekend intervals at other times.
  • Between Glenmont and Forest Glen: Every 10 minutes between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. and at regular weekend intervals at other times.

The free shuttle buses running between Forest Glen and Rhode Island Avenue will operate on two routes, Metro reported:

  • Limited stop buses will operate between Forest Glen and Rhode Island Avenue with a single intermediate stop at Silver Spring. Allow 12 minutes of travel time between Forest Glen and Silver Spring, and allow 25 minutes of travel time between Silver Spring and Rhode Island Avenue.
  • Local buses will operate between Forest Glen and Rhode Island Avenue, making stops at all intermediate stations (Silver Spring, Takoma, Fort Totten, Brookland). Allow 10 minutes of travel time for each station stop. For example, a rider traveling between Silver Spring and Fort Totten should allow 20 minutes of travel time, because the bus makes two stops.

While the stations are closed, work "crews will make improvements to third-rail infrastructure, install cable for Emergency Trip Stations, perform concrete repair work and continue platform reconstruction," Metro reported.

Last train notes: "The last Red Line train of the night from Glenmont to Forest Glen will depart 53 minutes earlier than normal to allow for shuttle bus connections. On Friday and Saturday nights, the last train will leave Glenmont at 1:44 a.m., and on Sunday and Monday, the last train will leave Glenmont at 10:44 p.m.," Metro added.

Labor Day schedule: On Monday, Sept. 2, the Metrorail system will operate from 7 a.m. to midnight on a Sunday schedule. "Off-peak fares will be in effect all day, and parking will be free at all Metrorail parking facilities," Metro reported on its website
