Montgomery County Council meets most Tuesdays in Rockville.
Montgomery County Council members will begin to discuss how to spend revenue collected from an ambulance fund that took effect this January at its next meeting, planned for Tuesday, May 14, at 9:30 a.m. in Rockville. The fund is the result of a law passed in 2012 that allows the county to collect fees from the insurance companies of patients transported by emergency medical services (EMS). It was defeated in a 2010 voter referendum, Patch previously reported, but reintroduced and passed by the County Council. County Executive Isiah Leggett submitted a proposal to allocate 15 percent of the revenue to the Montgomery County Volunteer Fire Rescue Association, the group that runs local volunteer fire and rescue stations. Gaithersburg police partnered with Montgomery County and Rockville police to aggressively enforce the nighttime use of seatbelts.
Montgomery County, Gaithersburg and Rockville police issued 139 traffic citations in a Friday night sting to aggressively enforce the nighttime use of seat belts, county police announced. From about 7:30 to 11 p.m., officers were stationed at entrance and exit ramps off of Interstate 270 and Interstate 495 and observed vehicles for seat belt non-compliance and other safety violations, according to county police. Andre Antonio Henry was arrested for 10 second-degree burglaries in office suites in Rockville and Bethesda.
A Washington, DC man police say was responsible for a rash of office suite burglaries and thefts in Rockville and Bethesda between Jan. 28 and April 15, 2013, was arrested on May 9 in Prince George's County, according to a statement from the Montgomery County Police Department. Police say Andre Antonio Henry, 29, of Northeast Washington, DC, used a flathead screwdriver to force open the entries into the office suites that he burgled. Henry stole electronics and other items, including a credit card, which he used to make purchases, police said. Charges against Henry, according to police, include: Surveillance videos from several of the burglaries helped police determine that the crimes were committed by the same person. And witnesses' …

Tens of thousands of law enforcement officers and their families are converging on Washington, DC, this week for National Police Week 2013, which ends May 18. Among the events will be the Annual Candlelight Vigil, now in its 25th year, on Monday, May 13. National Police Week 2013 full schedule of events. Will Montgomery County police stings improve pedestrian safety?
Montgomery County residents took to the Montgomery County Police Department Facebook page to express their opinions about pedestrian enforcement stings that began Wednesday. From 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, county police issued 72 citations for pedestrian safety infractions at the intersection of Veirs Mill Road and Turkey Branch Parkway in Aspen Hill, police said in a news release posted on the Facebook page. Lesli King Brown posted her wish for constant enforcement: "If only there was enough police enforcement available to to it all over the county all the time." Pedestrians in bright yellow t-shirts had about a 30 percent chance of crossing Democracy Boulevard in Bethesda Thursday without a close call from a passing car, according to Jimmy Chen, an intern with Montgomery County police. Chen was one of several plainclothes members of the department attempting to cross the street in a pedestrian "sting." Members of the department's traffic division are working to respond to an increase in complaints that drivers in some high-traffic areas aren't properly yielding to pedestrians, said Capt. A car hit a tree in the median strip of Connecticut Avenue near Saul Road on Tuesday afternoon. The driver received only minor injuries.
One person was injured in a crash on Connecticut Avenue around 4:30 p.m. on May 7, according to a county police statement. The vehicle—driven by Dawa Tamang, 39, of Rockville—was traveling south on Connecticut Avenue in Kensington when it left the road near the intersection of Connecticut Avenue and Saul Road, hit the road's center median strip and then hit a tree in that median, police said. Tamang received minor injuries from the incident, but front seat passenger Lok Katwal—31, of the same address as Tamang—remains in the hospital, police said. Tamang and Katwal were the only people in the car, and no other vehicles were involved, police said. Police do not yet know why the vehicle—a 2003 GMC Savana—left the roadway, according to the …
