Oxbow, a 15-1 longshot, went nearly wire-to-wire to win the 138th Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday giving trainer D. Wayne Lukas the all-time lead in Triple Crown race victories with 14. The bay colt, ridden by 50-year old Gary Stevens and owned by Calumet Farm, took the lead early from Goldencents and won the $1 million Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown by 1 ¾ lengths holding off Itsmyluckyday and Mylute in 1:57.54. The Triple Crown race will be held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Pimlico. NBC (WRC, WBAL) and Horse Racing Radio Network (WSPZ-AM in Washington is the only area affiliate) will have the call, which will also be streaming on the radio network's website. The Koa Sports Joe Horton Scholarship Fund recently offered three students baseball scholarships.
Joe Horton and his brother Andy successfully completed the 50-mile North Face Endurance Challenge last summer to raise money to establish a sports scholarship fund for unprivileged children, Patch reported. Through the Koa Sports Joe Horton Scholarship Foundation, three students from Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia recently were given more than $3,000 in scholarships to help them pursue their passions in baseball. “We couldn’t have planned it any better to get one [each] from DC, Virginia and Maryland, so we are spreading the joy,” Joe Horton said. This year's “Race to End Poverty” event at Meadowbrook Park registered more volunteers than previous years.
A Wider Circle kept a tradition going by hosting another “Race to End Poverty” this year, with more than 400 participants. The charity event started at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, at Meadowbrook Park. It was open not only to runners but also to anyone who wanted to join the cause, including children. Furnishing 3,650 homes last year with donated furniture and other household items, A Wider Circle—which helps families in need—hopes to raise enough money to furnish 4,000 more homes this year. Metrorail to go to OT if Caps do.
Metrorail, which has a station near Verizon Center (Gallery Place/Chinatown), will stay open an hour later if any Washington Capitals hockey playoff games run late or go into overtime, according to The Washington Post. The Capitals open their quest for the Stanley Cup against the New York Rangers on at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
